Washington (AP) - Burial mounds erected by prehistoric Indians in Iowa have been made a national monument. Iowa donated 1,000 acres of land for the new monument. Many of the mounds in the area are in the form of birds, bears and other animals. The bear mounds are 85 to 115 feet long, the birds from 70 to 120 feet across the wings. These mounds are two and one half to four fee high. Other mounds are conical or in the shape of long ridges. All are in Allamakee and Clayton counties.[note: the National Monument is now called Effigy Mounds]
