Get Married on Pennies

When Marian Wirkler and Donald Overbeck of Monona, Clayton County, were married recently they displayed the result of many months of planning and saving. It was evident they had been preparing for the wedding day for a long time. When they had their announcements printed at the Monona printing office, they lugged in an armful of money and paid the printer—all in pennies. Next they visited the marriage license bureau, said “Yes” to a lot of questions, carried out the license and left the dazed clerk to count a double handful of copper coins. Whether they also paid the minister entirely in pennies has not been discovered.

Luana: A very pretty wedding occurred April 28th at the St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran church in Monona, when the pastor, Rev. Daugs, united Miss Marian Katherine Wirkler, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Orville Wirkler of Monona, to Donald John, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Ben F. Overbeck of Luana. They were attended by Mr. and Mrs. John Wistrick of Elkader. Mrs. Frances Overbeck Wistrick of Elkader, sister of the bride, wore her wedding dress. The bride's aunts, Mrs. Will Weithorn Mrs. Minnie Lempke and Miss Alma Schroeder, prepared the three-course wedding dinner at the home of the bride's parents. Waitresses were, Miss Helen Schierman cousin of the bride, and Miss Caroline Overbeck aunt of the groom, among others. The newlyweds will be at home in the Orville Wirkler home in Monona.
