Byron W. Newberry, although 82 years old, still remains active in county circles as well as in his home town, Strawberry Point. He is president of the Clayton County Bar association and a member of the county board of education. For several terms prior to 1924 he served his district in the General Assembly of Iowa, where he has helped to write upon the statue books many of its best and most effective laws.

Mr. Newberry was born at Brownheim, Ohio, Sept. 1, 1853. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Newberry, were natives of New York, who, imbued with the pioneering instinct, came first to Ohio and then to Iowa. They equipped their son Byron and his brother Charles with the best educational advantages that the state afforded. After completing the course of study of the public schools, he attended Upper Iowa University and graduated in 1875. In 1876, he graduated from the University of Iowa law school with an L. L. B. degree, and was admitted to the Iowa bar.

Mr. Newberry immediately began practicing law in Strawberry Point. In 1887, he and brother Charles formed a partnership, which endured until the latter’s death. With years of successful practice, came added interests, and Mr. Newberry became a banker and farmer as well as lawyer.

For many years Mr. Newberry has been a member of the State Historical society. He is a member of the Iowa State Bar association and has been a member of the county board of education for 17 years. He is affiliated with the Knights of Pythias and is a member of the Congregational church.

When the initial effort was made to establish “The Devil’s Backbone” as a state park, Mr. Newberry was a member of the committee, and he presided at the dedication ceremonies May 28, 1922.
