Bro. James F. Thompson, grand master of the grand lodge of California, was born in Union City, Pa., May 29, 1844. His Odd Fellow record is excellent. He was initiated in Langworthy lodge of Lone Rock, Wis., in 1860, joined Northern Light lodge, No. 136, by card in Monona, Ia., in 1870, assisted in establishing Elkader lodge No. 304, Elkader, Ia. in 1875 and
was its first noble grand, and became a member by card of Fortuna lodge, No. 281, in 1888. In Iowa he served as representative and district deputy almost continually from 1877 to 1888 and was a member of the committee on appeals of that grand lodge when he came to California, May 1, 1888. He represented Fortuna lodge in the grand lodge of California from 1889 to 1891, when he was elected grand warden in 1898, was advance to deputy grand master and at the recent session unanimously elected grand master.~The Weekly Auburnian, Secret Society column, August 31, 1893 [Auburn, N.Y.]
