C.N. Goddard, a native of Rutland, Vermont, was born in 1835; came to Iowa with his parents in 1854, and in 1856 settled in Winneshiek County; served as clerk until 1860, when he engaged in business for himself. In 1862 he became a partner in the firm of Goddard, Henry & Hutchinson, subsequently Goddard & Henry. In 1874 the firm became Goddard & Ellsworth, continued the business alone, and now carries a stock of merchandise amounting to about $25,000. His present store he built in 1871; it is located on the site formerly occupied by the first store of Decorah. Mr. Goddard was married in 1861 to Miss Jennie Richardson, then of Clayton County, Iowa, buut a native of Vermont. The children are Harry, Clara, Herbert and Fred.
