This biography of John (Johann) Moser, the youngest child of Anton and Franciska Moser, was written by the contributor mostly from the Civil War Pension application submitted by his Mother. She died shortly after the submission of the first documents and thus never received any pension.

John (Johann) Moser
John Moser was born Jan. 11, 1844 in Basel, Switzerland. He emigrated to the United States with his parents and siblings in 1846. The family first settled in Madison, IL, but moved to Clayton County, IA in Feb. 1851.At the age of 17, on October 1, 1861, John enlisted in Co. K, 17th Missouri Inf. Volunteers at Dubuque, Iowa for service in the Civil War. Private John Moser was killed in action at Arkansas Post, Jan. 11, 1863. His personal effects were given to his older brother Lucas, who was serving in the same company and in the same location. John was just 19 years old at the time of his death.
The 17th Mo. Inf. was organized by order of Major General Fremont, in August, 1861, and during the time of John’s service took a prominent part in the following battles: Pea Ridge, 6th, 7th and 8th March, 1862; Searcy Landing, Arkansas, 19th May, 1862; Chickasaw Bayou, Mississippi, 28th December, 1862; Arkansas Post, Arkansas, 11th January, 1863.
