CONRAD HELWIG and DOROTHEA OELKE BELTZDORFF

Dorothea Oelke, b. 24 Aug 1823 in Sumte, Hanover, Germany, emigrated to the U. S. with her first husband Fritz Johann Beltzdorff, b. 17 July 1823 in Germany, probably around 1852. They were married in Germany in 1850. Whether her brother Franz accompanied them to Clayton County or accompanied her brother John is not clear.

Fritz Beltzdorff died 27 Aug 1852 in Garnavillo and is buried there. Their son, Carl Frederick Henry Beltzdorff, b. 28 Sept 1851 in Germany, died of diphtheria 26 Feb 1863 and is buried at Giard, Iowa.

On 2 Apr 1854 Dorothea married Conrad Helwig, b. 21 Mar 1819 at Remsfeldt, Kuhr Hesse Kassel or Homberg Kurhessen, son of Jacob and Anna (Schmidt) Helwig. They were the parents of four children, William b. 19 Feb 1855; Karl b. 25 Dec 1859; August b. 24 Dec 1861; and Elizabeth b. 17 Feb 1857, all born in Giard Twp.

William and Karl never married. William d. 16 Mar 1933, Karl 19 July 1879; both are buried in the Giard Cemetery. August married Clara A. Datisman 12 Oct 1897. He died 3 June 1953 and is buried at Giard. Elizabeth married Jacob Miller, the son of Jacob and Mary (Shiefele) Miller, b. 22 Sept 1847.

Jacob and Elizabeth (Helwig) Miller were the parents of eight children, Emma, Clara (Mrs. Benjamin Datisman), Grover, Nettie (Mrs. Henry Tieszen), Huldah (Mrs. George Hubacher), Ruth (Mrs. Oscar Erickson), Ella, and Norma.
