Clayton County Centennial Edition, July, 1936.

John T. Stoneman

John T. Stoneman, a handsome man, was the Chesterfield of the Clayton County Bar, and his pleasing personality and courtly address was more in keeping with the political hustlings than the rugged contests in the squared circle of the pioneer course.

He was a brother of General Stoneman, who after the close of the Civil War was governor of California.

A long period of litigation gave James McGregor possession of the McGregor town site and he willed it to the Buell relatives in New York, making John T. Stoneman the attorney.

Mr. Stoneman failed to realize his political aspirations in Clayton County and removed to Cedar Rapids, where he was elevated to the bench.
