    T. R. Jewell, a prosperous agriculturist and representative citizen of Delaware county, owns, operates and resides upon a farm of two hundred acres on section 11, Richland township. His birth occurred in Jo Daviess county, Illinois, on the 9th of October, 1860, his parents being John and Johannah (Richards) Jewell, both of whom were natives of England. They emigrated to the United States with their respective parents, settling in Jo Daviess county, Illinois, while subsequently they took up their abode at Strawberry Point, Clayton county, Iowa. There the mother of our subject passed away October 28, 1900, but John Jewell survives at the age of seventy two years and yet makes his home at Strawberry Point. To them were born nine children, eight of whom are still living.

T. R. Jewell attended the common schools in pursuit of an education and remained under the parental roof until he had attained his majority. Subsequently he was employed as a farm hand for two years and then cultivated a rented farm for a similar period, afterward purchasing a tract of land in Jo Daviess county, Illinois, on which he resided for some years. In the spring of 1900 he came to Delaware county, Iowa, and here operated a rented farm for two years, on the expiration of which period he purchased two hundred acres of land on section 11, Richland township, which he has cultivated continuously since. In association with his sons he likewise owns a tract of one hundred and twenty acres in Clayton county, Iowa, and also owns a quarter section of land in Stanley county, South Dakota, and a fruit farm of eleven acres in Florida. His undertakings as an agriculturist have been attended with a gratifying measure of success and he has long been numbered among the substantial and enterprising citizens of his community.

In 1881 Mr. Jewell was united in marriage to Miss Eliza A. Treague, a native of Jo Daviess county, Illinois, and a daughter of John J. and Agnes (Mallett) Treague, both of whom were born in England. They emigrated to the United States in 1846 and spent the remainder of their lives in Jo Daviess county, Illinois. Their children were eight in number. To Mr. and Mrs. Jewell have been born eight children, namely: Thomas R., who is now a resident of Minnesota; John J.; Albert E.; Roy Harrison; Agnes A.; Della May; William E.; and Edith J.

Mr. Jewell gives his political allegiances to the republican party and has served in the capacity of school directed. Fraternally he is identified with the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, belonging to York Lodge, No. 75. His religious faith is indicated by his membership in the Methodist Episcopal church, to which his wife and children also belong and in which he has served as Sunday school superintendent for ten years. He is interested in all that pertains to general progress and cooperates in many movements for the promotion of the community interests, being at all times a public spirited and loyal citizen as well as a successful agriculturist.
