Theodore P. Doty, 1838-1902

Theodore P. Doty was born in Monroe Co., N.Y., May 30, 1838, and died at his home in Clay Co., Ia., May 14, 1902. He therefore lacked only sixteen days of being sixty-four years of age. When quite young he moved with his parents to St. Joe county, Mich., where he lived until the year 1865, when he moved with his wife to Marshall county, Ia. He lived at the latter place till 1882 when he came to Clay county, where he has since lived.

He enlisted in 1861 and served his country as a soldier for a time. Mr. Doty was married Jan. 22, 1863, to Miss Sarah Malsby, by which union he has one daughter, Mrs. J. W. Homer, of Sheldon, Ia. He was married a second time, Aug. 27, 1870, to Miss Marian Kirk, who survives him. Five children came to this home, of whom three have died and two, Bertha and Ray, are with the mother at home.

Four brothers and two sisters still survive him and mourn with others in this loss. Their names are as follows: Mrs. J. D. Gehring, Lawrence, Kas.; J.H. Doty and E.M. Doty, Spencer, Ia.; H. M. Doty, Laurens, Ia.; Mrs. A.S. Ressinger and A.R. Doty, of Marshalltown, Ia.

Mr. Doty was a good man. He was a good citizen, taking interest in public matters and desiring that which would make town and county and nation better and more prosperous. He had interest in the moral as well as the material welfare of the community and did what he could to sustain Bible study and religious services.

He was a neighbor, kind, generous,accommodating and social. He enjoyed having neighbors and therefore was himself neighborly.

He was a good husband and father, devoted and self sacrificing.

He will be greatly missed in the home and in the community. All who knew him will ever hold his memory sacred.

The funeral was held at the home, Saturday, May 17, at 10:00 a.m., and the remains were interred at Riverside cemetery, Annett Post, G.A.R., conducted their impressive ceremony at the grave.

A large company of friends accompanied their neighbor to his last resting place.
