William Wallace Claypool was born June 4, 1842 in Joe Davis county, Illinois. At the age of eighteen with two brothers he enlisted as a volunteer in the United States army, serving three years and four months and obtaining rank of sergeant in Co. G., 3rd Missouri cavalry. On September 13, 1865, he was united in marriage to Eliza Livingston.
In 1874 he came to Iowa and located near Hampton until 1883 when he brought his family to Clay county. He broke the prairie sod and planted the trees on the two farms in which he lived at Hampton and Spencer respectively.
Mr. Claypool died at the home of his son, Charles, in Fort Dodge May 26, 1913, and the body was brought to Spencer for burial, the funeral being held from the Methodist church last Wednesday afternoon, the services being conducted by Rev. O. M. Bond, and the interment was in Riverside cemetery.
Mr. Claypool came from a line of brave men, and his life has maintained that characteristic. He was a good and useful citizen, and a man that had a host of friends in the community.
