Funeral for Dickens
Pioneer, 93, Held
Wednesday
Comrad Aaron Mott Jones, 93, one of the last three surviving Civil war veterans in Clay county,
who died early Monday at the home of his daughter near Dickens,was accorded patriotic rights in
the presence of a large attendance Wednesday afternoon.The funeral was held at 2 p. m. at the farm home of his daughter, Mrs. O. J. Elliott, with whom he
had made his home for many years. The Sons of Veterans organization played a prominent part
in the final rites.Legion Posts Take Part
The American Legion posts of Dickens and Spencer were largely represented at the funeral, the firing squad and the color guard taking a part in the ceremony.Two sons and four grandsons carried the casket which was draped with a large American flag. At
Riverside cemetery, where interment was made, the Odd Fellows and Rebekah organizations gave
the ritual.Jones, the last surviving charter member of Annette Post in Spencer, had been bedfast for two years with complications incident to old age.
Born In Pennsylvania
Born in Russell, Pa,, Sept. 20,1842, Mr. Jones came to Fayette, in northeastern Iowa, when a young man. There he was married to Alpha Retta Newcomer 62 years ago. Shortly after their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Jones came to Clay
county, and settled in the community near Dickens where they made their future home.Mr. Jones was one of three Clay county Civil war veterans still living. He enlisted with the Pennsylvania. Volunteers right after his brother had been wounded in the battle at Gettysburg, taking his station at Alexander, W. Va. He was on the battle scene when the war came to an end with the battle of Appamottox in April, 1865.
After the war he came from Bradford, Pa., to Fayette where he lived for seven years before coming to Clay county. His wife died Sept. 9, 1914.
Surviving are the following children:
Raymond B. Jones, Rib Stone, Alberta, Canada; Mrs. O. J Endicott, Dickens; Aaron Roy Jones, Mantario, Sask., Canada; Joseph Charles Jones, Dickens; Mrs. A. S. McCurdy, Spencer, and Fred D. Jones, Dickens.Mr. Jones was a member of the Oddfellow and Rebekah lodges at Dickens.
Interment in Riverside cemetery
