DEATH OF ARTHUR TURNER

Again it is our painful duty to report a sad tragedy--the death of a son of old and valued friends. Last Wednesday Mr. and Mrs. E.R. Turner, of this city, received a telegram from Montevideo, Minn., asking them to go to that place, as their son Arthur had been seriously hurt. Mr. and Mrs. Turner took the first train and arrived there the following morning. On arrival they learned that their son had attempted suicide by shooting. He had placed a revolver just below an ear and fired. The ball coursed upward, and as afterward shown by an X-ray examination, had not pierced the brain, but pressed against it.

Mr. Turner had been living in Montevideo and conducting a restaurant; at first he and a brother had been in business together, but some time ago the brother withdrew, leaving Arthur in full charge. The business was large, suitable help hard to secure, and Arthur did about the work of two men, taxing his endurance to the limit. This great physical strain, it is thought, may have affected his mind. Another trouble, it is reported, was that his physician told him he was a victim of quick consumption.

On Wednesday of last week, after going to the butcher shop and buying a supply of meat for his restaurant, he wrote a note to his cook in which he intimated suicide, and then went to a nearby woods and enacted the terrible tragedy. The shot not proving fatal be walked from the woods, when he was met and cared for. He was still conscious, for short periods, after his parents arrived, recognized and talked a little with them. On Friday be passed away. Mr. and Mrs. Turner reached Spencer Saturday evening, bringing the remains with them. The funeral was held at the home Sunday, at 3 p.m. when services were conducted by Rev. O.M. Bond. Burial was in Riverside.

Mr. Turner wan born in Spencer, and was past nineteen years old. He was a young man of fine promise-—industrious, prudent and free from bad habits incident to young men of his age. That his mind was diverted from its normal channel and a young life that gave promise of great usefulness prematurely ended, is inexpressibly sad, and his bereaved parents and brothers have the united sympathy of the community in their sudden and great sorrow.
