Fred W. Zahrt Sr. June 16, 1957, Spencer, Clay Co. IA. Fred W. Zahrt was born two miles north of Rossie in Clay Co. IA. on September 20, 1900. He was a resident of the Clay county and Rossie all of his life.
He attended country school and the Rossie consolidated school. He earned three merit certificates from mechanics courses.
He was born to Charles D. and Mary (Kimm) Zahrt. He was preceded in death by his brother, Charlie in 1918 and his parents, Mary, 1950 and Charlie D. in 1955. His early youth was spent farming with his parents. He was a mechanic for the Hjelm Implement Co, 1926-1948, the Herrig Implement Co. 1948-1956, and the Smith Implement Co. 1956-57.
On Feb 24, 1924, he was united in marriage with Rachel Roberts in Spencer. To this union eight children were born, one dying in infancy. The children are: Fred W. Zahrt Jr, of West Covins, CA; Beverly Jepperson of Rembrandt, Darwin Zahrt of Seneca; Roger Zahrt of Rossie; Gary Zahrt-Marine Corps-Okinawa; and Suzanne and Sandra Zahrt of Rossie at home.
He leaves one brother, Harley Zahrt of Spencer, and two sisters, Kate Upward of Compton, CA; and Grace Lady of Spencer; four nephews and three nieces. Nine grandchildren remain.
Funeral services were held from the Congregational church in Spencer. Active pallbearers were: O. F. Smith of Marathon; Tom Adams of Greenville, Hank Harms of Spencer, Tom Black of Rossie, Earl Kraft of Linn Grove, IA. Interment will be made in Riverside Cemetery.
