Charles Davis Zahrt, son of John and Amelia Zahrt, was born July 17, 1870 near Marengo in Iowa County, and died at Spencer on January 1955, at the age of 84 years, six months and two days.

He was married on January 15, 1895 to Mary S. Kimm at Norway [Iowa]. He had been a resident of Clay County for 55 years and for 27 years resided on a farm north of Rossie. For the last 23 years, he had been a resident of Spencer.

Mr. Zahrt was preceded in death by his wife who died in February of 1950. He was also preceded in death by a son, Charles Jr. He is survived by two sons and two daughters: Fred Zahrt, of Rossie; Harley of Spencer; Mrs. Leslie Upward of Compton, California; and Mrs. Harold Lady of Spencer. A brother and three sisters are left to mourn his passing. The are Jay Zahrt of Marengo; Mrs. Mabel Swain of Marengo; Mrs. Jessie Cox of Estherville; and Mrs. Alma Ryerson of Atlantic. In addition, he is survived by a total of 14 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, by a number of nieces and nephews and other relatives.

Mr. Zahrt was affiliated with the Wesleyan Methodist church and in an early day he was a Sunday school teacher in that church.

Funeral services for Mr. Zahrt were held at the Cobb Warner Funeral Chapel in Spencer, Saturday, January 22, at 2 p.m. Rev. Richard Goins of the First Christian Church officiated and music was furnished by Mrs. Robert Hager and Mrs. Grant Lachner. Burial was at the Riverside Cemetery in Spencer.

IA. he was married by Jacob Kimm to Mary Salome Kimm, daughter of Silas & Katharina Engel Kimm. Mary was born 10 Aug 1873 at Spencer, Clay Co. IA and died 8 Feb 1950 at Spencer. Charlie died 19 Jan 1955 at Spencer. They lived for a short time at Fremont Twsp. Benton Co. IA. but moved to Spencer.

To this union was born six children: Kathryn Ione b. 26 Oct 1896 at Atkins, Benton Co. IA died 16 Oct 1971 in Caompton, CA. She married on 17 Jul 1916 to Leslie Mark Upward at Spencer; An Infant, born 3 Jan 1897 at Atkins, Ia. died 26 Feb 1897 at Atkins; Charles Davis born 10 Mar 1897 Atkins, IA died 28 Jun 1918 at Spencer. IA. He is buried at Riverside Cem.; Fred William born 20 Sep 1900 Rossie, Clay Co. IA died 7 Nov 1957 Spencer and is buried at Riverside Cemetery. He married Rachael Violet Roberts at Spencer; Grace Irene born 6 Jan 1905 Rossie, Clay Co IA died 25 Jun 1978 at Spencer, IA. She married Harold Clare Lady on 19 Nov 1927 in Spencer. IA; Harley Wayne born 10 Dec 1908 in Rossie, IA died 16 Feb 1978 in Spencer. He married on 11 Jul 1931 in Sioux Falls, SD. to Evelyn Zola Jones.
