Mrs. Scott Case, well known resident of Spencer for fifty-five years, passed away at her home at 238 West Fourth street at four-twenty p.m. Friday, May 13, 1927, at the age of eighty-four years and one day. The deceased had been in poor health for many years, having suffered several strokes, one in last August which took away her speech, and for some time she had been practically helpless. On last Thursday evening, her eighty-fourth birthday, she had three strokes, and lived only one day.
Frances Vienna Grindle was born at Circleville, Ohio, May 12, 1843 Her early life was spent with an aunt, and at the age of four years she came to Jefferson county, Wisconsin, with her aunt. Her father died when she was a young child and after her mother's marriage to Edmund Long, the child lived with them.
On March 25, 1846, she was united in marriage with Scott Case at Waterloo, and they lived for eight years in Jefferson county. Four children were born to them, one of whom, a son Edmund, died at the age of fifteen years. They came to northwest Iowa and in 1872 located on a homestead In Osceola county. At that time there was no one living in that county so they moved to Spencer and made their home here, living on their claim a sufficient number of months in a year to keep it. Mr. Case carried on his trade of carriage-maker and carpenter here until a few years ago.
At the time they came to Spencer there were about twenty-five houses in the town and a half dozen business concerns. From their home at 238 West Fourth street, which was the last house on the street, they could look in three directions and not see a house, a tree or a building of any sort. Mr. and Mrs. Case made their home In this same house for fifty-four years, and since Mr. Case's death on June 27, 1926, Mrs. Case has remained in the old home. Mrs. A. C. Claussen, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Case, had been with her mother since last April, when Mr. Case became ill.
Mrs. Case was a well-read woman, and Interested In the affairs of the community. Her chief delight was in her home and family, and she was a wonderful mother to her children. She was by nature a happy person, and enjoyed having .company in the home, and she was a patient sufferer during the many years of poor health which she experienced. Both Mr. and Mrs. Case were brought up as Universalists, and later were affiliated with the Methodist church.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 17, at the Methodist church at two o'clock, with Dr. Herbert Clegg officiating. Special music was given by the ladles quartet of the Methodist church and the Woman's Relief Corps attended the services in a body.
The pallbearers were Harry Chamberlain, A. Larson, Ed Taylor, Cash Griggs, E.F. Axtell and Elmer Bailey.
Mrs. Case is survived by three daughters and one foster daughter, Mrs. A. C. Claussen of Spencer, Mrs. Olive Loretta Bell of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Mrs. Edna Lahoda of Omaha and Mrs. Hollis Buckwald of Omaha; one sister, Mrs. W. A. Fitch of Milwaukee; seven grandchildren and one great granddaughter. Mrs. Lahoda and Mrs. Buckwald of Omaha were present at the funeral services.
