Mrs. Lewis Scharnberg, well known and esteemed resident of Everly and Spencer for about forty years, died at the Albert Merritt Billings hospital In Chicago Sunday afternoon, September 1, 1929, after an Illness of more than five weeks. At the time of her death she was 61 years, 4 months and 1 day old.
Mrs. Scharnberg's death followed an operation for gall stones at the hospital four weeks previous to her death. She had suffered two bad attacks at her home on East Fourth Street, Spencer, three weeks before she was taken to Chicago. On the fourth day following the operation pneumonia set in, and this and other complications, resulted in her death. She had improved, however, the week before her death, and plans were made for her return home Thursday of this week.
Suffering a relapse last Thursday, her condition grew worse and shortly after a blood transfusion, she died. Mr. Scharnberg and the three daughters, Mrs. W.F. Peters, Mrs. E.N. Schoelerman and Mrs. J. Schoelerman, all of Everly, were present with their mother upon her death, also a niece of Mrs. Scharnberg, Mrs. Fred Bluhm, and cousins, Mr. and Mrs. Max Engle of Chicago
The body was brought to Spencer Tuesday morning accompanied by Mr. Scharnberg and the three daughters, and funeral services were held at two o'clock at the home on East Fourth Street and at two-thirty o'clock at the First Congregational Church in Spencer. The Rev. Benjamin J. Trickey, pastor of the local church, officiated at the sermon.
Pall bearers were E.G. Morgan, Jr., H.H. Hoberg and R. Brugman, all of Spencer, and John
Heuck, Henry .Schmidt and W.J Flick, of Everly.
Burial was made in Riverside cemetery in Spencer
Amelia Jurgens was born April 30, 1868 in Scott County, Iowa. Throughout her life she continued to make her home in Iowa. She moved to Benton County, Iowa, when twelve years old and later removed to Cherokee County.
Her next home was in O'Brien County where she met and was later married to Lewis Scharnberg, March 19, 1890 at Everly, Iowa. to the union of Mr. and Mrs. Scharnberg four children were born, Emma, Lewis, Elsie and Nola
Six years of their happy married life was spent on the Scharnberg farm near Everly, Iowa. They then moved into the town of Everly, where they lived for twenty three years. The past ten years have been spent in Spencer at their home, 453 East Fourth Street
Mrs. Scharnberg was preceded in death by her father and one sister
Surviving are her husband and four children, Mrs. W.F. Peters, Mrs. E.N. Schoelerman, Mrs. J.H. Schoelerman Lewis Scharnbertg, all of whom reside in the vicinity of Everly, her mother, Mrs. Margaretta Jurgens of Everly, five grandsons also six brothers, John Jurgens of Bingham Lake, Minnesota, Gus and Will Jurgens of Everly, Richard Jurgens of Adrian, Minnesota, Ed Jurgens of Bennett, Iowa and Fred Jurgens of Idaho, one sister, Mrs. Bertha Mangels of Hartley, Iowa, other relative and a host of friends
Relatives and friends in attendance at the funeral from out of town were Mr. and Mrs. Will Bennett and William Baumeister of Eiberon, Iowa, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Jurgens of Bennett, Iowa, Mr. and Mrs. Herb Tufty of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Mrs. Christina Scharnberg of Davenport and Mr. and Mrs. Richard Jurgens and son of Adrian, Minnesota
Mrs. Scharnberg was lived by many, for she was ever thoughtful and considerate of everyone, thinking of their wants and needs before her own. The family circle came first in her thoughts and she was a splendid wife and mother to them. Her circle of friends was large, also and she held the respect and she held the respect and esteem of her neighbors and all who knew her
