Funeral services for Roy Richard Nielsen, 65, of Everly, will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Hope Lutheran Church, Everly. The Rev. Roger Hanson will officiate and burial will be at Lone Tree Cemetery, Everly
Mr. Nielsen died Monday at Community Memorial Hospital in Missouri Valley
Casket bearers will be Doug Hart, LeRoy Post, Sam Burger, Kenneth Falline, Bob Weatherman and Roy Newcomb
Honorary bearers will be Joe Weatherman, Delmar Struve, Roger Ginger, Delmar Clarken and Dale Hollesen
The Warner Funeral Home, Spencer is in charge of funeral arrangements
The son of Chris and Kristen Nielsen. Mr. Nielsen was born July 4, 1921 in Granville. His childhood years were spent in the Marcus area, where he received his early education
He entered the military after his schooling and served with the Navy during World War II.
Following his discharge he returned to Gillett Grove and began farming
For a number of years, Mr. Nielsen worked for Tuttle's Popcorn Company in Spencer. He later moved to Richland Center, Wisconsin, where he farmed and then to Gillett Grove where he worked as a janitor in the South Clay School system for six years. He was currently employed by Spencer Brokerage, transporting Morton buildings
He married Catherine Pettit, December 20, in Manson. They lived in Everly throughout their marriage
Mr. Nielsen was a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church in Spencer; past commander of the Spencer VFW and the Eagles; and a member of the American Legion in Everly. He enjoyed gardening, fishing and playing pool
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and twin granddaughters
Survivors include his wife; seven daughters, Eileen Halbach, Diana Lawrence, Sandy McLinn and Mary Spieker, all of Denver, Colorado, Betty Olesen of Carlos, Minnesota, Gerry Fisher of Paton and Shirley Scharf of Fort Dodge; there sons, Duane Popp of Dayton; Darryl Popp of Gowrie and James E. Valentine II of Mason; 22 grandchildren; three great grandchildren; a sister, Ingrie Alger of Webb; and two brothers, Howard and Earl (Bud) Nielsen both of Spencer
