Funeral services for Dorothy Strawn, 89, of Spencer, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9, 2015, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Spencer. Rev. Len Halvorson will officiate the service.
Visitation will be conducted beginning one hour prior to the funeral service at Bethany Lutheran Church. Burial will be conducted at Riverside Cemetery in Spencer.Strawn passed away Tuesday, Jan. 6, at St. Luke Lutheran Home in Spencer.
Dorothy Joan Strawn, the daughter of John and Dorothea Jensen Erbs, was born June 15, 1925 in Dickens. She received her early education and graduated from Lake Center Township Consolidated School in 1942. Dorothy continued her education at Hamilton's in Mason City.
Dorothy married Ralph "Red" Max Strawn on April 4, 1947 in Jackson, Minnesota. Dorothy spent 20 years of her life serving Clay County as county recorder. She was a life time member of the Bethany Lutheran Church in Spencer, Spencer Women's Bowling Association and volunteered for Spencer Hospice, Spencer Hospital Auxiliary, St. Luke Lutheran Home and Spencer Head Start. In her spare time, Dorothy enjoyed traveling, line dancing and later in life she took up quilting which brought her much comfort. She had the honor of taking a quilt to the Iowa State Fair and won Best of Blue. She donated a number of quilts to the Lutheran Camp.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Red; three sisters: Marie Erbs, Madeline Johnson and Margaret Carpenter and her son-in-law, Tom Harper.
Left to cherish her memory are her two daughters: Nola Harper of Des Moines, and Ellen (Dennis) Maxwell of Edmond, Oklahoma; three grandchildren: Alison, Natalie and Austin; great-grandchild, Ella Harper; other relatives and friends.
