Thomas R. Amlie was born in Ridgeway, Ia, (then a Norwegian Community) on April 2, 1864, and spent his early life there. He was confirmed in the Lutheran faith. His aim in life was to get an education and he achieved this end by his own efforts. He attended the State Teachers College at Cedar Falls and received the B.S. degree in 1889. For two years he attended the State University of Iowa graduating in 1894. He did graduate work at the University of Chicago.

He devoted his life to public school work until his 45th year, serving as a teacher in Litchfield, IL, Mason City and Spencer. He was high school principal in Creston and a superintendent in Grand Junction and in Rolfe.

He married Evelyn Hulbert in 1896. Three children were born to them. Lucille, (Mrs. John Kent of Poway, Calif.); Brandt of Humboldt and Elizabeth (Mrs. Felix Segulja of Somerton Ariz.); a nephew and niece were also part of this family, Jeanette (Mrs. Joe Hoopes of Bel Air Md.) and Dr. Paul Amlie of Blairstown.

In 1909 he began to operate a farm at Peterson which he considered his home until his death. His wife preceded him in death in 1937.

Mr. Amlie continued to reside part of the time at his farm until his 92nd year. From the age of 92 to 100 he lived in California. At the age of 100 he returned to his beloved state of Iowa to spend his last years. For the past four and a half years, he has lived at the Good Samaritan Home in Pocahontas.

He died Sunday afternoon, Jan. 10, 1971 in his 107th year. He was an active member of the congregational Church and of the local chapter of the Masonic Lodge at Peterson. He served the community as a member of the school board for many years.

He is survived by his three children, three grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, January 13 at 1:30 p.m. at the First Congregational Church in Peterson for Thomas R. Amlie. Rev. C.A. Hyde and Rev. A.W. Dumke officiated. Pallbearers were Rodney Amlie, Fred Ebert, Arlo Benson, Delford Amlie, Remington Hyde, and Melvin Fastenow. Powers Funeral Service of Pocahontas was in charge of arrangements.
