Funeral services will be 10:00 A.M., Saturday, January 3, 2015, at the United Methodist Church in Spirit Lake.

Burial will be at 1:00P.M., Saturday at the First Reformed Cemetery in Everly, Iowa

Military Services will be conducted by the American Legion Post #384 of Milford

Vernon Bernard Dykstra, the son of Adrian (Ed) Michael and Dowina (Dorothy) Dykstra, was born February 1, 1930 in Marion, South Dakota. In 1934, they moved to a farm northwest of Everly, IA, where he received his education at Waterford Country School and graduated from Everly High School in 1947.

Vernon passed away at his home in Mesa, Arizona on Wednesday December 17, 2014.

Vernon farmed for most of his life, in addition, he served on numerous boards and committees in the community including the Farmers Co-op Elevator, the consistory of the Trinity United Church in Hartley, and Farm Service. Vernon was a dealer for DeKalb Seed Corn, Latham Soybeans, and Lindsey Zimmatic Center Pivots for many years. His youngest son, Todd, is now farming the same land that Vernon farmed for almost 50 years.

Vernon enjoyed golf, fishing, and spending time with his friends. One of his greatest joys was watching his grandchildren playing sports and enjoying time with them at his house on Lake Okoboji.

Vernon married Patricia Wilson on January 12, 1950, in the Hope Reformed Church in rural Everly, IA.

Shortly thereafter, he entered the military and served with the US Army in Baumholder, Germany.

He was discharged in 1954 and returned to the farm north of Hartley, where he and Patricia raised their family. They retired to Okoboji in 1990.

They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2000, and after a long battle with cancer, Pat passed away on January 11, 2001.

Vernon married Norma Dickens in October of 2001, and they were together until her death in October 2011.

He is survived by three children; Brian Dykstra and his wife, Sandra, of Blair NE; Todd Dykstra and his wife, Jennifer, of Hartley, IA; and Lisa Rigby and her husband, John, of Spencer IA. He is also survived by 7 grandchildren; Kyle, Derek, Kymberli and Paige Dykstra of Blair, NE; AJ, Breanna and Marcus Dykstra of Hartley, IA; and step-grandchildren Austin, Kelsey, Trevor, Cole, Taylor, Destiny and Caleb Hagedorn of Dickens, IA

He was proceeded in death by his wife, Patricia, and second wife, Norma as well as his parents, Adrian and Dorothy; brothers, Elmer and Lester Dykstra, and sister, Dorothy Galm.

He is survived by his sister, Betty Bonker and her husband, Leonard of Harlingen, TX; sister-in-law, Barb Dykstra of Spencer, IA, sister-in-law, Gloria Dykstra of Spirit Lake, IA and Lacie and Terry Thrall of Mesa Arizona; other relatives and many friends. both in Okoboji and Arizona.
