AUGUST HENRY HEIN

August Henry Hein, one of the oldest early settlers of Clay county and a resident of this vicinity for a period of over forty-five years, passed away at his home, 219 west First street, Sunday evening at seven-fifty o'clock after an Illness of less than one week. His death was due to old age.

August Hein was born in Germany on June 24, 1834, and made that country his home for a period of twenty-nine years. He attended their schools and then became engaged in farming. In 1863 he came to America and settled at LaCrosse, Wisconsin, where he assisted with the building of railroads for four years. Then he worked for a time on the railroads at Algona, Iowa. Mr. Hein came to Clay county about 1876 and settled on a farm three and a half miles northwest of town, the farm that is now known at the Theodore Krause farm. Later he sold this farm and moved onto a farm south of town where he lived for twenty years before establishing his home on west
First street.

He was married on December 5, 1871, to Miss Ernestine Drager of Wisconsin and to this union eight children were born. Two passed away in infancy and the others who mourn their loss with the mother are Mrs. R. E. Logan of Spencer, Mrs. William Deegan of Wilmette, Illinois, who with her husband had been caring for her parents for the past two years, H. O. Hein and T. F. Hein of Montevideo, Minnesota, George Hein of Spencer and Louis Hein, who lives on a. farm northwest of town. He is also survived by twelve grandchildren.

A short prayer service was held Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock at the house and a public service was held at two-thirty o'clock at the Grace Methodist Episcopal church, with the Rev. Robert Leo Stuart conducting the services. Interment was made in Riverside cemetery. The children were all present at the services.

Mr. Hein had been a faithful member of the Methodist church for many years having joined the church shortly after coming to America.
