A funeral service for Melvin Ebel, 77, of Spencer, will be held, November 7, 2000, 2 p.m. at Grace United Methodist Church in Spencer. The Rev. Craig Finnestad will officiate

Mr. Ebel died Saturday, November 4, 2000 at the Spencer Municipal Hospital in Spencer

Casket Beares; Carl Ebel, Jr., Kenneth Ebel, Don Warnurton, Larry Ebel, Ben Ebel

Burial will be at North Lawn Memorial Park in Spencer

Military services will be provided by the American Legion Glen Pedersen Post #1.

Melvin Ebel, the son of Charles and Martha Jane Clardy Ebel was born February 6, 1923 on a farm near Paullina. He received his education in country schools

He joined the Army in February, 1943 and served in the European Theater. He was wounded twice in France and was sent back to the United States in January 1945. He spent six months in the Army Convalescent Hospital in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He received the Purple Heart and was discharged on July 3, 1945

On November 12, 1945, he married Mildred Lyman in Melvin. They lived in Primghar where he ran a delivery service for three years, before buying the service station two miles west of Melvin.

In 1952, they moved to Diagonal where he was an auctioneer for a sale barn.

They moved to Spencer in 1955. He worked for Stolley Sand and Gravel and for Noel Construction Company. He later started his own car and small engine repair business. He retired in 1985

Preceding him in death were his parents; six brothers and two sisters

Survivors include his wife, Mildred of Spencer; one son, Marvin Ebel and his wife, Joi of Hawarden; four grandchildren; two foster daughters; Kathy Holmes of Emmetsburg and Sharon Fortner and her husband, Gary of Cedar Rapids; three brothers; Ernest and his wife Betty of Spencer, Paul and his wife, Gladys of Primghar and Milton and his wife Eunice of Primghar; one sister, Helen Emerson of Milwaukie, Oregon; other relatives and friends

Warner Funeral Home of Spencer is in charge of arrangements
