Robert Christian Wede (Bob), age 86 of Peterson, Iowa, died Thursday, April 1, 2010, at the Spencer Municipal Hospital in Spencer, Iowa.

Bob was born on July 26, 1923, at home near Peterson, Iowa, the eldest son of Chris and Viola (Noethe) Wede. He was baptized as an infant and confirmed as a youth in the Catholic faith.

On June 14, 1945 Bob was united in holy matrimony with Beatrice (Albers) in Sutherland, Iowa. The couple was blessed with six children: Andrew, Ronald, Richard, Thomas, Douglas and Susan. Bob loved the land, and together with his wife Bea, farmed and fed and traded cattle his entire life.

He was an active and faithful member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Sioux Rapids, Iowa. He supported the community in which he worked and where he raised his family. He was elected to the Clay County Fair Board of Directors in 1979 and served on the Executive Board of Directors from 1980 to 1994.

In addition to his love of farming and feeding cattle, Bob had a deep appreciation and love of horses. He was actively involved with the Iowa-Minnesota Chuckwagon Racing Association, serving many years as president. Bob was a member of the Clay County Fair Police force for 43 years, beginning on horse patrol and finishing his tenure as Chief of Police.

Family meant everything to Bob. A loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather, he treasured the days of watching his children and grandchildren growing up. He and Bea enjoyed traveling to many of the grandchildren's activities and spending the winters in Laughlin, Nevada, from 1986 to 2007. His kind and caring ways will be dearly missed by all those who knew and loved him.

Left to cherish his memory are Bea, his wife of 64 years; his children and grandchildren: Andrew (Maureen) of Grand Island, Nebraska, Krista (Paul) Wheeler, Scott (Kristi) Wede, Kimberly (Ray) Prado, Jennifer (Joe) Tippins; Ronald (Betsy) of Purcellville, Virginia, Christine (Gary) Simpson; Richard (Carol) of Calmar, Iowa, Robb Wede; and Susan (James) Schumacher of Delaware, Ohio, Michael (Erin) Schumacher, Steven (Emily) Schumacher, Sarah (Ryan Binderup, fiance) Schumacher, Christina Schumacher; 13 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild; sisters: Florence Plagman of Spencer, Iowa, and Dorothy (Darrold) Tatman of Okoboji, Iowa; sister-in-law, Shirley Wede of Peterson, Iowa; brother-in-law, D.J. Albers of Tucson, Arizona; extended family and many friends.

Preceding Bob in death were his sons, Thomas and Douglas; his parents, Chris and Viola Wede; one brother, Clarence; and parents-in-law, Jess and Melva Albers.
