March 19, 2002Robert Conlon, 80, Spencer, died Tuesday, March 19, 2002, at the St. Luke Regional Medical Center in Sioux City
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, March 23, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Spencer with Rev. Roger Linnan officiating
Honorary Casket Bearers will be the V.F.W. and the American Legion
Casket Bearers; Mike Conlon, Pat Conlon, Tom Conlon, Pat Powers, Tom Conlon, Pat Powers, Todd Doyle, Mike Hemann
Interment will he held at the North Lawn Memorial Park of Spencer
Robert Joseph Conlon, the son of Thomas and Catherine Conway Conlon, was born March 8, 1922 in Emmetsburg. His early childhood was spent in various communities as his parents moved a lot during the depression
On April 18, 1942, Robert married Virginia Blessing in Spencer.
On November 4, 1942, he entered the military and served with the U.S. Army during WWII. While in the Army, he worked as a baker and also served with the 551st Field Artillery Battalion and was involved in the Battle of the Bulge. He was honorary discharged from the Army in November of 1945
Following his service, he worked at his father's bakery in Clarion until his father sold the business.
In 1953, he moved to Spencer, where he was the manager of the bakery at Super Valu for 25 years
He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, American Legion, V.F.W., Knights of Columbus and the D.A.V.
He is preceded in death by his parents and a daughter
Mr. Conlon is survived by his wife of Spencer; one daughter, Linda Conlon of Spencer; two sisters; Ruth Kliegl and her husband, Vincent of Fresno, California and Teresa Powers and her husband, Dick of Sun City, California; one brother, Larry Conlon and his wife, Jan of Clarion and other relatives and friends
