North Lawn CemeteryWilliam Wayne (Bill) Overeen, the son of John Jacob and Grace (Stafford) Overeen, was born May 4, 1923 in Sac County, Iowa. His childhood years were spent near Early, Iowa, where he received his education in country schools. His family moved to northwest Iowa, where he attended Greenville Town School and later Barlow Country School, north of Dickens. He completed his education at Lake Center School, graduating in 1940. Bill farmed with his father north of Dickens until about 1943, when he began farming on his own.
Bill married Margaret Lucille Hall on May 28, 1944. They resided on the farm until 1970, when they moved to the City of Spencer. He was employed by Spencer Schools until he retired in 1988. Bill was involved in 4-H as a leader for many years, as well as the Farm Bureau Board. He loved his family, gardening, fishing and camping. He enjoyed visiting with many people as well as singing silly songs to his children and grandchildren.
Bill was baptized in the First Christian Church in Spencer and attended the United Methodist Church in Dickens and Spencer.
He passed away at the Spencer Hospital on Monday, May 18, 2009 at the age of 86.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers: Gene, Drexel and John Overeen; one sister, Romola Grethen; one grandchild, Eric Overeen Prentice and a sister-in-law & brother-in-law; nephew, Galen Grethen.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Margaret of Spencer, IA; four daughters and their spouses; Peggy and Lee Seck of St. Louis Park, MN, Becky and Rich Prentice of Spencer, IA, Barb and Tim McKinley of Ames, IA and Jane and Jeff Jans of Fostoria, IA. Ed and Jan Nelson of Ida Grove, IA; two surviving sisters: Helen Damstrom of Spencer and Barbara Dotson of St. Louis Park, MN; Grandchildren; Great Grandchildren; Sisters-in-law; other relatives and friends.
