1983Rolland Virgil Crane, 78, retired owner of Crane's Refrigeration Service of Spencer, died Saturday at the Spencer Municipal Hospital.
The son of Floyd and Hope Crane. Mr. Crane was born in Dickens on April 2, 1905. He was educated in the Dickens and Royal Schools and attended Gates Business College in Waterloo. When he returned home, he worked with his father and brothers doing carpentry work.
When road construction began in this area, he worked at several locations building and operated a Waylite Plant at East Chicago, Indiana and worked there for several years. While in the East Chicago area, he took refrigeration and air conditioning training. Later he returned to Iowa and worked for Champion Thompson Refrigeration Service until he started his own business, which he operated in Spencer until his retirement.
On August 5, 1936, he married Jennie E. Boom.
He was a member of Refrigeration Service Engineers Society, Evening Shade Lodge, 312 A.F. and A.M. and Grace United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Janice Swartz of Las Vegas, Nevada and Margaret Hartzler of Boulder, Colorado; one sister, Hazel Jensen of Spencer; and five grandchildren.
Services will be 10:30 a.m., Tuesday at Warner Chapel in Spencer. The Rev. Elmer Boom and the Rev. Robert Cummings will officiate.
Burial will be in North Lawn Cemetery.
Pallbearers; Ward Jensen, Russell Brugman, Bill Crane, Carl Crane, Tom Crane and James Carey.
The Warner Funeral Home of Spencer is in charge of arrangements.
