Funeral services for Robert (Gene) Bryson, 81, of Spencer were held Monday, June 26, 2000 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Spencer. The Rev. Roger Linnan and Rev. Robert Gralapp and Deacon Jack Easter officiated.

Casket Bearers; Rich Adam, John Adam, Ed Adam, Bryan Buffington, Allen Coughenour, Bill Chambers and Orville Taylor.

Honorary Casketbearers; The Main Street Coffee Grouping, Golfing Friends and Rural Letter Carriers.

Interment was at North Lawn Memorial Park, Spencer.

Mr. Bryson died Friday, June 23, 2000 at Spencer Municipal Hospital.

Robert (Gene) Bryson, the son of Sam and Josie Graves Bryson was born September 23, 1918 in Stockport. His childhood years were spent in Stockport, where he received his early education, graduating from Stockport High School.

Mr. Bryson enlisted in the military in 1942 and served with the Army Air Force as a radio operator during WWII. While stationed in Europe he flew 25 sorties over enemy occupied territory in a B-17 bomber. He was discharged in 1945 as a 1st Lieutenant, having received the Air Force Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters and the Distinguished Flying Cross.

He returned to Iowa following his military service and settled in Fairfield. He attended Parson's College and began his career with the Gamble's Store.

He married Martha Adam on May 13, 1947 in Keota. The couple lived in Fulton, Missouri, for a short time following their marriage, where Mr. Bryson managed a Gamble's store. In 1949, the couple moved to Spencer, where for a number of years he managed Gambles. In 1966, he began working as an investment representative for Waddell and Reed, continuing with the company until 1998. He also worked for 12 years as a rural mail carrier, retiring in 1985.

Mr. Bryson was a longtime member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Spencer Rotary Club, the American Legion, 379th Bomber Group WWII Association, Rural Letter Carriers and the Spencer Golf and Country Club.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son and one sister.

Mr. Bryson is survived by his wife, Martha, one son and his wife, Steve and Susie Bryson of Kailua, Hawaii; one daughter and her husband, Sue Ann and Dan Scoles of Ames; four grandchildren and one sister, Sally Thorton of Pleasanton, California.

Warner Funeral Home of Spencer was in charge of arrangements.
