May 28, 1985Funeral services for Gustav Carl Bendlin, 88 of Spirit Lake, were conducted on Friday, May 31. 1985. at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Spencer, with Pastor George Jacobsen officiating.
He passed away on Tuesday, May 28, at the Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Spirit Lake.
Casket Bearers; Virgil Bendlin, Arnold Clark, Pete Adams, Donald D. Bendlin, Robert Strauss and Lawrence Hansen.
Honorary Bearers; Richard Lawrence, Robert W. Sackett, Kenneth Spies, Harold Heins, Nick Milliman, Roy Stross, Bernard Shirk and Adam Szack.
Interment was in the North Lawn Cemetery, Spencer.
Gustav Carl Bendlin, son of William and Matilda Berg Bendlin was born October 6, 1896 in Varna, Illinois. His childhood years were spent in that community, where he received his early education. Gus with his parents, brothers and sisters, moved to Clay County in 1916, when he began farming.
He married Ruth Bernhagen on December 28. 1921 in Spencer. Throughout their marriage, Gus and Ruth lived and farmed in Clay County. Ruth died on March 10, 1971 and Gus continued to farming until he retired in 1977.
He married Dorothea Georgina Olin on April 25, 1979 in Jackson, Minnesota. They moved to Center Lake near Spirit Lake following their marriage and it was there that they had since made their home.
Gustav had long been a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Spencer, where for many years, he served on the church board.
He was an active Hereford Cattle raiser, but also found time for fishing and cards.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothea; two sons and their wives, Clarence and Mary of Spencer and Edgar and Camelia of Hacienda Heights, California; eight grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; two brothers, Chris of Spencer and Fred of Whittier, California; two sisters, Mrs. Flora Eldridge and Mrs. Alma Lacey both of Spencer and many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife; three brothers, Wilhelm, Ernest and Harold; and three sisters, Emma, Anna and Matilda.
The Warner Funeral Home in Spencer was in charge of arrangements.
