Funeral services were 10:30 a.m. Monday at Grace United Methodist Church for Gaylen Whitmer Ayres, 76, of Spencer, who died Friday at the Marian Health Center, Sioux City. The Rev. Jerry Brown officiated.

Casket Bearers: John Mills, Ken Johannsen, Bill McCleary, Larry Clausen, Greg Iverson and Gary Johannsen.

Burial was at North Lawn Cemetery.

Mr. Ayres was born October 6, 1909 in Spencer to Augustus and Harriet (Whitmer) Ayres. His childhood years were spent in the Spencer community where he received his early education and graduated from high school.

On February 3, 1934, he married Dorothy McCleary. they lived in Spencer where Mr. Ayres was self employed as an auto parts distributor

Mr. Ayres retired in 1967 and then enjoyed traveling and trailering.

He was a longtime active member of Grace United Methodist Church in Spencer.

He was preceded in death by two brothers.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Delores Gramley of Vancouver, Washington, Patricia Huddleston of Oak Harbor, Washington and Shirley Paulsen of Spencer; one sister, Hazel Anderson of Oskaloosa and six grandchildren.

Warner Funeral Home of Spencer was in charge of arrangements.
