Gustaf E. Walstrom, a resident of Royal and vicinity for the past eight years, died at the St. Joseph's hospital in Sioux City Friday evening, March 30, 1928, at 10:30 o'clock following an illness of several weeks. Death was caused from spinal meningitis. At the time of his death he was 35 years, 7 months and 22 days of age.

Mr. Walstrom was taken sick several weeks ago at his home in Royal but was not taken to the Sioux City hospital until two weeks ago. He seemed to improve a little, but in few days he grew worse and all indications were that the end was near.

The body was brought to the Cobb Funeral Home last Saturday and funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the Bethlehem Lutheran church at two o'clock conducted by the pastor of the church, the Rev. N.C. Carlsen, assisted by Rev. G.L. Dagner, pastor of the Swedish Lutheran church of Spencer. Interment was in Riverside cemetery.

Gustaf E. Walstrom was born July 8, 1892, in Lincoln township, Clay county, Iowa. On September 25, 1917, he was united in marriage to Miss Lucille Shuck of Royal and to this union three children were born.

On February 25, 1918, Mr. Walstrom joined the colors of his country and enlisted and served with Company A, 125th Infantry. A few months late he was at the front in France and on the fifth day of October, 1918, he was gassed on the Argonne battlefield.

After his return to the United States he was honorably discharged at Fort Sheridan, Illinois. He arrived home the following day which was eight years ago March 31. From that time until March, 1921, he farmed in the vicinity of Royal, when he moved into the town of Royal where he worked as a mechanic until he was taken sick.

He was preceded in death by an infant son. His wife and two little daughters Vira Rea and Vera Lotta, of Royal, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Mike Walstrom of Spencer, two half-brothers, Richard Johnson of Hector, Minnesota, and Fred Johnson of Duluth, Minnesota, one half-sister, Mrs. Henry Schneider, four brothers, Carl Walstrom of Montevideo, Minnesota, Alfred Walstrom of Manson, Iowa, Walter Walstrom of Royal and Ernest Walstrom, four sisters, Mrs. Albert Barglof of Greenville, Iowa, Mrs. Clarence Remillard of Ruthven, Iowa, Mrs. Waldo Lundt of Linn Grove, and Mrs. Dean Pyle of Albert City, besides many other relatives and friends in Royal and Spencer.

He was a devoted husband and father, a good neighbor, and was among the many who fought our battles on the bloody fields of France during the World war. He suffered and sacrificed for his country, and he probably never overcame the effects of being gassed in the Argonne forest.
