DEATH OF JACOB KIRCHNER

One of Peterson's First Settlers Passed Away Tuesday, February 16, at his home in Fort Dodge. Settled in Peterson in 1856.

Another of Peterson's first settlers passed away Tuesday at his home in Fort Dodge after a short illness. In 1856 J.A. Kirchner, Jacob Kirchner and a Mr. Mead came out here from New York. The Kirchner family came as far as Dubuque and remained there while these three men pushed on into this part of the country which was in an unsettled condition. When they arrived on the bluff south of Peterson they decided this was the place they had been looking for, and after deciding on a place to live, went back after their folks. They first settled across the river by the mill and the old log cabin they built was torn down about a year ago. They were our first settlers and the hardships of the first winters on account of the Indian and trips overland through the snow to Fort Dodge and Cedar Falls after flour, etc., are well known in the history of Peterson. After remaining here a few years with his family Jacob Kirchner went to Fort Dodge and engaged in the milling business and was a resident of that place until his death. Mr. Kirchner was married in Fort Dodge but received a divorce from his first wife and was married in 1897 to Miss Letty Bucknum of Peterson, who with three children survive him. Mr. Kirchner was 69 years, 8 months and 5 days old.--Peterson Patriot (reprinted in Spencer Reporter).
