Pioneer Mother Laid To Rest

Mrs. Mary E. Walters, 50 Years A Clay County Resident, Died Suddenly On Friday, Feb. 7

Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Ellen Walters were held at her home, 863 Grove street, at 1:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, with Rev. J.P. Thomas in charge. Interment was made in Riverside cemetery. Mrs. Walters, who for almost a half century, was a resident of Clay county, died suddenly at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Anna Sturhahn, at Sioux City on Friday of last week, February 7. She had gone to Sioux City to aid her daughter, who had been ill with influenza.

Mary Ellen Allender, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Allender, was born at Fairfield, Iowa, on July 25, 1847, and was 71 years, 6 months and 12 days old at the time of her death. On December 30, 1868, she was united in marriage to John B. Walters. To this union eight children were born, six sons and two daughters. Ernest died two years ago last October at the age of 27 years. The husband and father died five years ago last March. He was a veteran of the Civil War.

Mr. and Mrs. Walters came to Clay county in the year 1871 and homesteaded a farm five miles northeast of Spencer. There they resided for 25 years, undergoing the privations and hardships of pioneer life. It was on the homestead that the family grew to manhood and womanhood. Twenty-three years ago they moved to Spencer where they continued to reside until reaching the end of their earthly pilgrimage.

Mrs. Walters was reared by Christian parents and in her early childhood days she united with the Methodist church of which she was an honored and faithful member when the end came. Six years ago Mrs. Walters sustained a fall from which she never fully recovered and from that time on was not able to continue her religious activities as before.

Those of her family who survived to mourn the loss of a good mother are Harry M. Walters, Guy L. Walters, Charles M. Walters and Knox E. Walters who reside near Langdon; B.F. Walters and Mrs. Anna Sturhahn of Sioux City and Mrs. Bertha Roper of Eagle Grove. In addition to her children she is survived by six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, besides her aged mother at Fairfield who is 95 years old, and a large number of friends.
