Mrs. J.K. Martin, a well known resident of this city, died at Phoenix, Arizona, on Sunday, May 17, at 12:40 p.m. Her death was due to tuberculosis and she had been in failing health for some time. On December 22 she left for Phoenix, Arizona, in hopes of regaining her health. For the first six weeks she was at St. Luke's hospital and at the end of that time was changed to the Helen Lee sanitarium. Her mother, Mrs. Matilda Richards, accompanied her to Phoenix and was with her for a while. Mr. Martin returned from there two weeks ago. He had been called there by her serious condition, as at that time, there was little hope for her. While little encouragement was felt at the time she left Spencer all that medical skill could do to restore her to health was done. It was hped that a change of climate might bring about an improvement in her health.
Avis Marie Richards was born on July 27, 1892, at Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where she lived until she went to Chicago when about four years old. After graduating from high school she entered the University of Wisconsin at Madison where she took a four year course in domestic science, graduating and receiving her degree in 1916.
In the year 1918 she taught domestic science in the high school at Jackson, Minnesota. She continued to teach there until the fall of 1919 when she came to Spencer and taught in the high school for two years. She had a great deal of ability and accomplished much in her school work. She not only was liked and appreciated among her students but was highly respected by others who knew her and worked with her in connection with the various activities of school. In the fall of 1921, having accepted a position as domestic science instruction in the high school at Lewistown, Montana, she took up her work there and the following summer, on June 17, 1922, she was united in marriage to J. Kenneth Martin of Spencer. The marriage took place at Milwaukee at the home of Mrs. Richards.
Following their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Martin located in Spencer and lived in the Webb home on West Fourth street, and for the past two years have lived on the Martin farm, two miles southeast of Spencer. To this union one daughter, Katherine Marie, was born and is now eight months and two weeks old.
Besides her husband and baby daughter she leaves to mourn their loss, her mother, Mrs. Matilda Richards, of Milwaukee, and two brothers, Olin at Phoenix, Arizona, and Everett at Springfield, Illinois. Mrs. Richards will be unable to attend the services on account of illness.
Mrs. Martin was a member of the M.E. church, having joined when a child. She had a very sweet disposition and pleasing personality, which won for her a large circle of friends here as well as in the other places she has lived and taught. Mrs. Martin was affiliated with Kappa Alpha Theta national social sorority.
The remains will be shipped to Spencer and funeral services will be held here on Friday afternoon at two o'clock at the Cobb Funeral home. Miss Gertrude Munger will sing "Abide With Me." Rev. B.J. Trickey, pastor of the Congregational church, will have charge of the services and interment will be made in Riverside cemetery. Those who will serve as pall bearers are: R.C. Hubbard, Dr. J.P. Lippold, C. Bittinger, Joy Dolvin, Maris DeWolf, Henry Groth.
