North Lawn Memorial Cemetery, Spencer, IABetty Jane Crowl Chickering, the daughter of Roy and Emma Johanna (Kruse) Crowl, was born July 10, 1921 in Arlington, SD. She received her education in Clay County, Iowa rural school, Fair Play, Greenville Consolidated School and later graduated from Everly High School.
She worked as a bookkeeper at Spencer Machine and Welding and M. & J.R Hakes Wholesale in Spencer and later as a postal clerk at the Webb Post Office.
On March 6, 1948, she married Clark W. Chickering at Jackson, MN. They lived and farmed in the Webb and Moneta areas.
She was a member of the Everly United Methodist church. She was on the building committee for the new church, financial secretary for the building committee and a member of WSCS.
Betty volunteered for various charitable organizations, was active in the Farm Bureau Extension Committee and Lone Tree Gleaner's Club. She was named Clay County Rural Homemaker in 1964.
They retired from farming in 1975 and for 14 years lived on West Lake Okoboji, prior to moving to Spencer in 1989. She was a member of a Friendship Bible Study group at the Lakes. Betty and Clark enjoyed numerous winters in Florida and California.
Betty Jane passed away at the Avera Heart Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD on Saturday, December 19, 2009 at the age of 88.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Donald; one stepson, Larry, one step-daughter, Cynthia, one step grandson, Neal and a sister, Cleo Rieck.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Clark of Spencer; other relatives and many friends.
