A Good Woman Gone

Last week we mentioned that Mrs. Andrew Hummel had died at Los Angeles, California, where she had gone in company with her husband and Mrs. D.L. Ryder to spend the winter in the hopes of bettering her health.

Miss Louisa Castendyck was born near Peru, Illinois, on September 30, 1855. On May 30, 1883, she was united in marriage to Andrew Hummel. In the spring of 1890 they came to Clay county, Iowa, and settled on their farm south of Spencer where they resided until about twelve years ago when they came to Spencer, and this place has been her home since that time.

Mrs. Hummel was a lovely woman, a good Christian lady, a good neighbor and a loving and devoted wife. While of a retiring disposition, she made many warm friends. When health permitted she was active in all social affairs. She was liberal and many neighbors can testify to many acts of kindness.

Last October Mrs. Hummel went to California in hopes of regaining her health. She died there quite suddenly on February 10. The body was brought to Spencer for burial, arriving here Friday evening. The funeral was held from the home on west 5th street Sunday morning at 10:30 o'clock, being conducted by Rev. D.D. Proper, district superintendent of Missions of the Baptist church, conducting the services, and the interment was in Riverside cemetery.

She leaves to mourn her loss, her husband, four brothers, Charles Castendyck of Peru, Illinois, William Castendyck of LaSalle, Illinois, Gustaf Castendyck of Spring Valley, Illinois, and one sister, Mrs. Fannie Seaton of Seatonville, Illinois, and a large circle of friends in Spencer and vicinity.
