A Sudden Death

Levi Epley died very suddenly at the city scale office Monday afternoon at about 1:30. Mr. Epley has been the weighmaster there for some time, but for the past few weeks has not been feeling very well. Monday night he felt quite bad and had a hard time walking home from the office, and Tuesday morning his grandson Rollin Atwell, took him to work in a cutter. When he reached the office he said that he felt fine, and to some friends who spent a couple of hours that morning with him he remarked that he was feeling fine. Shortly after noon Henry Mauss, one of the men who had visited him that morning passed by the scale room, and heard a groan. He opened the door and found Mr. Epley sitting in a chair, and very sick. At his request he called a doctor, and at the same time summoned his son-in-law, E.F. Axtell, and by the time they got back Mr. Epley was unconscious and died before the doctor arrived.

Levi Epley was born Sept. 2, 1851, at Stephenson county, Illinois. Was married to Miss Mary Myers, March 17, 1871, and to this union four children were born, two sons who died in infancy and two daughters, Mrs. E.F. Axtell of this city and Mrs. O.J. Sacquety of Holstein.

When a young man Mr. Epley was converted and united with the Evangelical church, and later united with the Methodist church, and was a member of this church at his death.

In 1880 the family moved to Waverly, Iowa, and later to Cedar Falls to educate their daughters.

Twelve years ago they came to Spencer where they have since resided. Mr. Epley was a kind and considerate husband and a father, a man who was quiet and unassuming, honest in his business dealings, and a man who had a large circle of friends.

The funeral is to be held tomorrow afternoon at two o'clock and the interment will be in Riverside cemetery, the services will be conducted by Rev. O.M. Bond.

Mr. Epley leaves to mourn his loss his wife, two daughters, two brothers, J.H. Epley of Waverly, J.W. Epley, of Gentry Arkansas; three sisters, Miss Ella Epley of Waverly; Mrs. Elizabeth Richards of Freeport, Ill.; Mrs. Mary Rote of Dakota, Illinois; amd twp grandchildren, Rollin and Gladys Axtell of Spencer.
