Mrs. L.S. Starkey, resident of Spencer for the past ten years, died at her home, 388 West Eighth street, Tuesday morning, May 6, at 7:30 o'clock, following an illness of nearly a year. Mrs. Starkey had been in poor health since last August, but had rallied and shown considerable signs of improvement at Christmas time only to grow worse later. For the past two months she had been bedfast. She was 70 years, 4 months and 13 days of age.
Funeral services will be held this Thursday afternoon at the Starkey home at two o'clock and at 2:30 o'clock at the Grace Methodist Episcopal church, Dr. Herbert Clegg, pastor of the church, will conduct the services and burial will be made in Riverside cemetery. Pall bearers will be James Carver, Theodore Miller, Charles Smith, Roy Mason, John Lidman and William Flindt Jr.
Mrs. Starkey, who was Miss Belle Bergeson before her marriage, was a life-long resident of Iowa. She was born near Decorah, Iowa, Winneshiek county, December 23, 1859. She remained with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. B. Bergeson, until she was about nine years of age when the family removed to Dickinson county where she grew to young womanhood, and continued to make her home there until her marriage.
The marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Starkey was performed July 7, 1879. After their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Starkey continued to farm in Dickinson county for three years, and thence they moved to a farm near Huron, South Dakota, which was their home thirteen years.
They returned to Dickinson county at that time and farmed for four years and then they moved to Terril where Mr. Starkey was engaged in the implement business for a number of years. Their next home was in Moberly, Missouri, where they remained for three years, returning again to Iowa to farm near Ayrshire for several years.
Prior to coming to Spencer, May 1, 1920, Mr. and Mrs. Starkey lived for a short time in Story City. For two years after moving to Spencer Mr. Starkey was associated with the New York Life Insurance company, and in 1922, he purchased the small grocery store on West Eighth street which he is now operating. In 1926 Mr. Starkey bought the Red Circle grocery store on Grove street which he still owns.
Mrs. Starkey was a member of the Lutheran church, and was at one time a member of the Royal Neighbor lodge.
Surviving Mrs. Starkey are her husband and six children, Mrs. C.M. Dyer and Mrs. J.L Crew, both of Ayrshire, Mrs. T.H. Tvedten, Mrs. C.W. Bittinger and E.J. Starkey all of Spencer, Mrs. Ed Morrow of Chicago, twenty-three grandchildren, other relatives and a host of friends in the community wherein she had resided.
