Philo Wilcox of Spencer, 72 years of age, passed away Saturday morning, August 29, 1931, at four-thirty o'clock at his home on West Fourth street. Death followed an illness, that resulted from a stork which Mr. Wilcox suffered three years ago.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at two o'clock at the Church of Christ in Spencer with Rev. W.F. Hurst, pastor of the church in charge. A quartet of ladies, Mrs. Roy Noll, Mrs. E. Joy Roberts, Mrs. John Mingus and Mrs. Lloyd Santee, sang "In the Sweet Bye and Bye" and "Someday We'll Understand." Mrs. J. Elliot Gould sang "No Night There," accompanied at the piano by her husband.
Four sons, Leo, Perry, Dale and Woodrow Wilcox, all of Spencer and two sons-in-law, Arthur Witt of Storm Lake and Wayne Staton of Lytton, served as pall bearers. Burial was made in the Riverside cemetery.
Philo Wilcox, son of Amos and Minerva Wilcox, was born March 25, 1859, at Maquoketa, Clinton county, Iowa. When twenty-one years of age, he moved to Sac county where he was united in marriage September 20, 1899, to Zena M. Martin at Sac City, Iowa.
Mr. and Mrs. Wilcox made their home on a farm in Sac county until in 1914, when they moved to Clay county and lived on a farm, four miles west of Spencer. About five years ago they moved to Spencer, and have resided in a home on West Fourth street.
Mr. Wilcox became a member of the Church of Christ in Spencer in 1917 and remained a faithful member until his death. He was also a member of the Knights of Pythias.
He is survived by his wife, four sons and two daughters, Leo Wilford, Perry Ford, both of Spencer, Belle Marie, now Mrs. Arthur Witt of Storm Lake, Iowa, Vivian Estella, Mrs. Wayne Staton of Lyton, Philo Dale and Woodrow Vale, both of Spencer; four grandchildren, Lavonne Mae and Donavan Eugene Wilcox, children of Mr. and Mrs. Leo Wilcox, Gwendolyn Irene Wilcox, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Perry Ford Wilcox, and William Gordon Witt, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Witt of Storm Lake; a sister, Mrs. Lydia Roberts and a brother, Dan Wilcox of Sac City, Iowa.
All of the children of Mr. Wilcox attended the funeral except Mrs. Arthur Witt of Storm Lake, who was unable to attend on account of illness.
