Donald Duane Alger, the son of William O. and Ether (Speed) Alger, was born May 9, 1932 in Webb, Iowa. His childhood years were spent in Gillett Grove, Iowa, where he received his education, graduating from Gillett Grove High School in 1950.

Following his schooling, he farmed for two years, until entering the military in 1952 and serving his country with the U.S.Army during the Korean War, until his discharge in 1954. Following his discharge, he farmed in Estherville and later Webb.

Don married Gloria V. Twito on November 2, 1957 in Estherville, Iowa. They continured to farmm until moving to Spencer in 1961. While in Spencer, Don worked at the Spencer Packing Plant for 16 years. In 1966, Don and Gloria began operating Spenco Credit Union, which Don managed part time from 1966 to 1981 and full time from 1981 to 1985.

Following his retirement from Spenco, he worked for Eaton Corporation for 10 years, until his retirement in 1995.

For the past 13 years, don has owned and his son has helped operate Alger Motors and the Car Care Center in Spencer.

He was an active member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Spencer, where he served on the church council. He was also a member of the VFW in Spencer, where he was an officer. Don was a past member of the HYNoon Kiwanis, the Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and the Iowa Credit Union League Board

He also enjoyed golfing, playing bridge, TV sports and auto races, spending time with his two special grandchildren, Adam and Andrew and working with two children; Doug and Corrine at Alger Motors.

Don passed away at the Spencer Hospital on Thursday, October 1, 1998 at the age of 66.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his daughter, Kathy Alger in 1992

He is survived by his wife, Gloria of Spencer; one son and his wife, Douglas and Carolyn Alger of Spencer; one daughter and her husband, Forrine and Steve Hoogeterp of Spencer; two granchildren; Adam and Andrew Hoogeterp; two brothers and their wives; Orrin and Connie Aler of Spencer and George and Dorothy Alger of Dickens; one sister, Karen Titler of Everly, Iowa; other relatives and many friends.
