Funeral services were held Friday at the Methodist church in Webb for Mrs. James G. Grieve, 81 years of age, who died Wednesday morning, January 20, at her home north of Webb. Death followed an illness of nearly a month's duration. Reverend Arthur Bottom was in charge of the late rites and burial was made in the Garfield cemetery.
Mrs. Janet Hardie Grieve, pioneer resident of Clay county, was born in Scott county, June 30, 1850.
At an early age, she joined the Christian church at Long Grove, Iowa, and always retained her membership there. On December 25, 1873, she was married to James Gilmour Grieve at Long Grove, Iowa. To this union were born five children, John, George and Frank of Webb, and Mrs. Janet Hitchcock of Havelock, Iowa, also James, twin of Janet, who died at the age of two years at Kingsley, Iowa.
Her parents came from Scotland, landing at New Orleans where they waited several days before they could get a boat to come up the Mississippi river to Davenport, Iowa.
Mrs. Grieve was truly a pioneer of Iowa. She received her education in the rural school of Scott county, the first years in a log schoolhouse. On coming to Scott county she saw the laying of the railroad from Davenport to Long Grove. Moving to Plymouth county, she saw the building of the railroad from Carroll to Sioux City. After coming to Webb, she witnessed the construction of the Milwaukee railroad from Des Moines to Spirit Lake.
The first ten years of her married life were spent on a farm near Long Grove. In the spring of 1883, the family moved to Plymouth county, locating on a farm four miles east of Kingsley. Three years later she moved to the town of Kingsley where she resided until March 10, 1894, when she came to the farm in Garfield township, which has since been her home.
"Grandma" Grieve, as she was familiarly known among her neighbors and friends, was a friend to everybody. In cases of need she was always the first to lend a assistance and sympathy. Her thoughtfulness contributed much to the lives of many of the early settlers of Webb, who always found a ready and cheerful welcome at the home of Grandma Grieve.
She is survived by her husband, and three sons and a daughter, John, George, and Frank, all of Webb, and Mrs. Janet Hitchcock of Havelock. Besides her husband and four children, Mrs. Grieve is survived by six grandchildren, namely Harold Hitchcock of Havelock and Price, Mary Elizabeth, Sara Louise and Phyllis Grieve, all of Webb; three brothers, David Hardie of Pierson, Iowa, Thomas Hardie of Kingsley, Iowa, and John Hardie of Macksville, Kansas.
