Spencer, IowaRonald LeRoy Berkenpas, the son of Leonard and Anna Marie (Scholten) Berkenpas, was born December 1, 1940 in Seney, Iowa. His childhood years were spent in Alton, Iowa, where he received his education, graduating from Alton High School.
Ron married Sharon Anderson on December 29, 1963 in Everly, IA.
After their marriage, he entered the military and served with the U.S. Army from 1963 until his honorable discharge in 1965.
After his military service, they returned to Spencer, Iowa where they made their home. Ron worked as an officer for the Spencer Police Department for 30 years.
Following his retirement, he worked for the Spencer Cemetery for 16 years. He was a longtime member of Hope Reformed Church in Spencer. In his spare time he enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family.
Ron passed away at the Spencer Hospital on Sunday, June 16, 2013 at the age of 72. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Sharon of Spencer; his daughter, Tracy Gathman and her husband, Mike of Spencer; two grandsons: Zachary and Brett Gathman; one great grandson, Ayen Gathman; three brothers: Roger Berkenpas of Sacremento, CA, James Berkenpas of Sioux Center, IA and Phil Berkenpas of Orange City, IA; one sister, Mary Wassenaur of Orange City, IA; other relatives and many friends.
