Shirley J. Baier, age 78, of Sioux Rapids, Iowa died March, 27, 2013 at Spencer Municipal Hospital in Spencer.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 30, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at the First United Church in Sioux Rapids, Iowa.

Burial will be in the Oakland Cemetery in Peterson, Iowa.

The Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids is in charge of the arrangements.

Shirley Janice Negus, the daughter of Orson and Elsie (Heinze) Negus, was born in Sutherland, Iowa on September 5, 1934. She lived her youth and received her education in Sutherland where she was a graduate of the Sutherland High School. Following high school, Shirley had served as the secretary to the school superintendent and the school board.

On March 24, 1954, Shirley was united in marriage to Jerald L. Baier at the Sutherland United Methodist Church and this couple was blessed with five children: Bruce, Pamela, Patricia, Melissa, and Brian. Shortly after their marriage, Shirley joined her husband in France where he was in the service. Following Jerry’s honorable discharge from the service, they resided in Peterson, Iowa, until moving to Sioux Rapids in 1969. While residing in Sioux Rapids and raising 5 children, Shirley was employed at Moe’s Clothing Store, Ray’s Foodland, and Don’s Market. She also was an Avon representative for many years.

Shirley was a member of the First United Church of Sioux Rapids,the Women’s Fellowship and Circle. She was very much a part of her children’s lives by serving as a Sunday School and Bible School teacher, a Cub Scout Den Mother, and a Girl Scout Troop leader. Shirley also took an active role in the community by participating in the BPW, the Study Club and supported her children's many athletic activities. She had many special interests that included gardening, flowers, bird watching, reading, sewing, drawing, and following the activities of her children and grandchildren. Shirley was also an avid Minnesota Twins fan. One of her greatest loves in life was spending time at their cottage at Spirit Lake.

Shirley’s life will always be honored and cherished by her family which include her husband of 59 years, Jerald “Jerry” of Sioux Rapids, Iowa; her children: Bruce (Linda) Baier of Alta, Iowa; Pam (Charlie) Ahlrichs of Pocahontas, Iowa; Patti (Gary) Juhl of La Porte City, Iowa; Missy (Kyle) Gingrich of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Brian (Amy) Baier of Brandon, South Dakota; grandchildren: Ben Baier, Jessie (Kyle) Hansen, Jamie Baier, Rob (Katy) Ahlrichs, Libby Ahlrichs (Curt Roberts), Amanda (Darren) Mar, Kaitlin Juhl, Ryan Gingrich, Jason Gingrich, Samuel Gingrich, Emma Baier, and Brandon Baier; three great grandchildren: Connor Hansen, Blake and Caleb Roberts; brothers: Roger (Carole) Negus; Robert (Nina) Negus; Merle (Diane) Negus; David (Cathy) Negus; sisters: Janet Negus, and Donna (Kevin) Dighton; nieces; nephews; other extended family and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a great grandson, Owen Roberts; brother, James Negus; and two sisters, Marjorie Negus and Helen Selk.

Interment in Oakland cemetery
