Malinda Johnson Gould, 1865-1929

Resident of Clay county for the past twenty-one years, Mrs. George W. Gould died at her home on Water street, Spencer, Thursday, November 14, 1929. Death followed an illness of seven weeks. At the time of her death she was 64 years, 1 month and 1 day old.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon in the chapel of the Cobb Funeral Home, at two o'clock with the Rev. W.F. Hurst, pastor of the Church of Christ of Spencer, officiating at the rites. Mr. and Mrs. S.R. Axe sang "Nearer My God to Thee" and "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere," accompanied by Miss June Dickinson at the piano.

Following the services the body was taken to Dickens where burial was made.

Mrs. Gould, who was Miss Malinda E. Johnson before her marriage, was born in Ohio State, October 13, 1865. She removed to Kane county, Illinois, when ten years of age, and there she grew to young womanhood. She was united in marriage to George W. Gould March 15, 1883, at Elburn, Illinois.

Four children were born to the union of Mr. and Mrs. Gould, three sons and one daughter. The children are Byron Gould of Spencer, J. Elliot Gould of Spencer, Nathan Gould of near Fostoria and Mrs. Edith Knight of Dickens.

Following their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Gould continued to make their home in Illinois until 1908 when they came to Iowa and located on a farm four miles east of Spencer. They engaged in agricultural pursuits until 1926 when they retired and moved to Spencer which had since been their home.

Mrs. Gould is survived by her husband, four children, fourteen grandchildren and one brother and three sisters, namely, Charles Johnson of Callaway, Minnesota, and Mrs. M.B. Seeley of Silverdale, Kansas, Mrs. J.P. Johnson of Stanley, Wisconsin, and Mrs. D.A. Ketcham of Whittier, California. Mrs. Seeley was with her sister during her illness, having come to Spencer about ten days ago to spend the winter here.

Among those from out of town present for the funeral, in addition to Mrs. Seeley, were Mr. and Mrs. Charles Johnson and son, Arthur, of Callaway, Minnesota, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Moss of Worthington, Minnesota, nephew and niece of Mrs. Gould, Mr. and Mrs. R.H. Knight, of Sanborn, Minnesota, and Webb N. Gould of Aurora, Illinois. The latter departed for his home Sunday evening.
