ERNEST G. GUSTIN SHOT AND KILLED

GILLETT GROVE FARMER DEAD AS RESULT OF ACCIDNET WITH A GUN

IT HAPPENED LAST EVENING

Was Evidently Lowering Gun Form [sic] Top of Load of Hay When It Was Discharged

Ernest Guy Gustin, 48 years old, a farmer residing on the Wayne Smith farm a mile northeast of Gillett Grove, was killed almost instantly by the accidental discharge of a shotgun by himself while he was working on a load of hay on the farm of his brother-in-law, Henry Ries, south of Dickens yesterday evening.

No one saw Mr. Gustin shot. Mr. Reis heard the report of the gun, and ran toward the sound. He was in time to see Mr. Gustin walking away from the load of hay about twenty feet and then fall down. When Mr. Reid got to him, Mr. Gustin was breathing his last. He died without telling what had happened.

Mr. Gustin was plowing on the Reis farm yesterday. Mr. Reis said he laid the gun on the load of hay and told Mr. Gustin it was there. It was thought that Mr. Gustin got onto the load to throw off some hay to feed the horses. The gun was found on the ground at the front end of the wagon. A board on the hay rack above was cut through by the shot. It was supposed the Mr. Gustin attempted to lower the gun to the ground, holding it by the muzzle, that the trigger struck something and was tripped.

The charge tore into Mr. Gustin's left side in an upward direction, toward the heart. He must have got down off the load before Mr. Reis came in sight of him.

Coroner Sokol was notified and went to the place. After inquiring into the circumstances he reached a finding that Mr. Gustin's death was accidental.

Mr. Gustin was born in Wisconsin. Surviving him are his wife, who was Miss Blanche King of Dickens, and five children--Ralph, 17 years old; Mary, 12; Leo, 10; Neal, 8; and Morris, 6. There are also a brother, B.M. Gustin of this county, and his father and mother and three brothers in Wisconsin.

Arrangements for the funeral have not yet been made.
