James E. Seller, resident of Clay county for the past thirty-five years, died very suddenly at his home, 799 East Fifth street, Spencer, Friday evening, May 4, 1928, at seven o'clock. Death was caused from heart trouble following an attack of the flu. At the time of his death he was 59 years, 9 months and 17 days of age.
Mr. Seller had been in poor health since the first of the year, however, he had not been bed fast prior to his death. He was up and about town the day of his death, returning to the Seller home about four o'clock and then decided to work in his garden. He complained to his wife that he did not feel well and she suggested to him that he rest. His death occurred a few hours later.
A short prayer service was held at 10:30 o'clock at the Seller home Monday morning for the immediate relatives and in the afternoon at two o'clock at the chapel of the Cobb Funeral Home conducted by the Rev. B.J. Trickey, pastor of the Congregational church. Miss Gertrude Munger and Mrs. J.J. Cairna sang "Abide with Me," and "Thy Will Be Done," accompanied by Mrs. R.M. Tuttle at the piano. James A. King, Chas. Anderson, C.S. Weaver, Thomas Lacey, Henry Vollmer and Thomas Anthony acted as pall bearers while honorary pall bearers were P. Flipsey, Nels Anderson, L.D. Thompson, H.H. Hoberg, Peter DuBois and P.M. Miller. Burial was made in Riverside cemetery.
James Edgar Seller was born August 21, 1850, at Crawfordsville, Indiana, the son of John Morlan and Harriett Seller. He lived on a farm there with his parents until he was twenty-four years of age when he came to Iowa and settled on a farm at Shellsburg. He farmed alone for one year and on March 5, 1878, he was united in marriage to Miss Clara L. Bright at the home of her parents in Independence, Iowa. They engaged in farming for fifteen years and then came to Clay county in 1893 locating on a farm in the Harmony district south of Spencer where they had since resided. Their first home was on East Third street where they remained for eight months, later moving to the current present home on East Fifth street.
Early in life Mr. Seller was converted into the Christian faith at the Pleasant Hill Presbyterian church at Pleasant Hill, Iowa, to which church Mrs. Seller was also converted. This was when Mr. Seller was thirty years of age. Both remained members of this church until they came to Clay county and then they transferred their membership to the Congregational church of Spencer.
Mr. Seller is survived by his wife and two sons, Everett Seller of Clinton, Iowa, and Earl Seller of Spencer, Iowa, and three grandchildren, Janet and Victor Seller of Spencer, and Edgar Seller of Clinton.
