Anna Kathrine Sondergaard was born in Mejls, Varde, Denmark on February 2, 1901. She was the daughter of Jens and Margretthe Kruse Skjerning Leth. Anna was baptized, confirmed and married in the Lutheran Church at Varde, Denmark.
Anna married Ebbe Hansen April 21, 1922. Two daughters were born to this union: Karen Kristine on January 23, 1924, in Varde, Denmark, and Margrethe on March 29, 1929, in Chicago, Illinois. Anna, Ebbe and Karen came to the United States on April 21, 1927. Ebbe died April 20, 1965. Anna married Jens Sondergaard May 10, 1967. Jens died March 19, 1971.
Anna and her family moved to Spencer, Iowa, in 1930. She moved to Ruskin in 1979 to be near her daughter, Margretthe, and has been a resident of St. Luke's Home in Spencer since 1980. She was active in Bethany Lutheran Church, St. Luke's home and the V.F.W. Auxiliary. Anna passed away on October 18, 1990, at St. Luke's Home at the age of 89 years.
She was preceded in death by her two husbands; daughters Karen and Margethe (Mrs. Donald Petersen of Ruskin); her mother, father, two sisters and four brothers. She is survived by her grandchildren, Becky Stoner and Richard Olson of Minneapolis, Minnesota, David Petersen and Paul Petersen of Ruskin, Nebraska, Audrey Hansen of Stillwater, Minnesota, Mark Petersen of Lincoln, Nebraska, Jenifer Schlehr of St. Louis Park, Minnesota, Carol Wulf of Superior, Nebraska, and ten great grandchildren. She is also survived by one son-in-law, Willis Olson of Hastings, Minnesota; step-children Jiggs (Gerald) Sondergaard of Mesa, Arizona, Mrs. Don (Beverly) Sondergaard of Spencer, Iowa, and their families; and a host of other relatives and friends in Denmark and the United States.
Funeral services were held October 20, 1990, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Spencer, Iowa, with the Rev. Lee Sather officiating and the committal service was at Meadow Township Cemetery in rural Spencer.
