PROMINENT CITIZEN PASSES AWAY

J.H. Walsh, Former Supervisor, Died at Home of His Daughter in North Dakota

J.H. Walsh, a well known Clay county citizen, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Grace Griggs, in Bismark, North Dakota, October 19. Mr. Walsh left here some few weeks ago for a western trip and stopped off to visit his daughter and was there taken with a stroke of apoplexy. Mr. Walsh visited his daughter in North Dakota about two years ago and was then take with a stroke and laid out on the open prairie for some time, and it was many months before he fairly recovered from that stroke. Wherever you placed Mr. Walsh he was a square and upright man, clean and honest. He was splendid husband, father and neighbor. He served on the board of supervisors for many years and in that capacity made an excellent official.

James H. Walsh was born in Porthope, Ontario, Dec. 3, 1846. When he was nine years old he went to Milton, Wisconsin, where he resided with an uncle for many years. When he was a young man he moved to Mason City, Iowa, where he lived for some time, coming to Clay county in 1881 and settling on a farm in Gillett Grove township, where he resided until he moved to Dickens, Iowa. Mrs. Walsh died a good many years ago.

The body was brought from Bismarck to Dickens, and on Saturday morning at ten o'clock the funeral was held in the Dickens M.E. church, being conducted by Rev. O.M. Bond of Spencer. The body was laid to rest in Riverside cemetery, the services at the cemetery being under the direction of the Odd Fellows lodge of Dickens, of which the deceased was an honored member.
