Herbert Secor, an old time resident of Spencer up to a dozen years ago, met with an accidental death last Wednesday morning at Chamberlain, S.D., death being caused by escaping gas from a hard coal stove. The building was a flat, and some of the other occupants of the room heard Mr. Secor groaning, and went in and found him nearly dead. A doctor was summoned and he soon brought him out all right, and the others left him, but a few hours after it was found that he had died.
Mr. Secor was born in Wisconsin Oct. 8, 1847. He came to Clay county at an early date and lived here for years. Leaving here he went to New Hampton, Iowa, where he was for quite a while and from there to various places in Minnesota, and at the time of his death he was living at Chamberlain. He was an old soldier, being a member of a Wisconsin regiment. He was a good kindly dispositioned man and had many friends here.
The body was brought here for burial, the funeral being held Friday afternoon from the home of his cousin, T.H. Jones, on west 4th street, Rev. J.O. Thrush officiating, the interment being made in Riverside cemetery. The G.A.R. gave their burial service at the cemetery.
