Spencer, IowaAugust Wilson Burdette, the son of Hubert and Rena (Wilson) Burdette was born August 27, 1920, in Dolliver, Iowa. His early childhood years were spent in Dolliver. At age 13, August accepted Christ as his Savior at the Dolliver Methodist Church. His family moved to Gillett Grove at the age of 16. August graduated from Gillett Grove Consolidated School in 1940, graduating salutatorian of his class.
On December 25, 1940, August was united in marriage to Maxine Prentice in Webb, Iowa. Following their marriage, August worked for the Quaker Oat Company of Gillett Grove while helping his father on the farm. August and Maxine moved to Emmetsburg for a couple years before moving back to the Gillett Grove area where he farmed on his own for over 50 years.
August was a member of the Gillett Grove Community Church. He was also a Sunday school teacher for 17 years, Sunday school superintendent for 9 years, and a MYF leader for eight years with an average of 50 kids in his group.
August was an amateur radio operator, talking to people all over the world, he enjoyed cutting wood, gardening, and taking care of his sheep. Most of all he enjoyed being with his family and being a good example for his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
On September 3, 2007, August went to be with his Lord at the age of 87. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Jerry; two sisters: Marvelle DeVore and Betty Jean Burdette; one brother, Kenneth Burdette; and one great-granddaughter, Riley Ann Murray.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife Maxine Burdette of Gillett Grove, IA; four daughters: Marie (Wendell) Conover, of Lincoln, NE, Sandra (John) Roehrick of Des Moines, IA, Audrey Burdette of Spirit Lake, IA, Jane (Dan) Gray of Logan, IA; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one sister, Rachel Kruckman of Laurens, IA; other relatives and many friends.
